Start with something fun!

Updated: Dec 12, 2020

When I get out to the studio, sometimes it’s overwhelming. I’ve gone so many directions and though it’s been a great release it can raise a question of feeling like I have too much to do. So I start with something easy, fun and quick. For me that involves drawing. So yesterday I got out a sable round brush and a bottle of India ink. I grabbed a stack of figure reference and just started filling a page on an 18” x 24” drawing pad. It’s good paper but not precious paper. Someone that inspired me was Meghan Brady out of Camden, Maine with a studio in Rockland, Maine. She’s a terrific artist and creates these gorgeous giant abstract works on computer paper! Make sure you have a big stack. It’s keeps the flow going.

This is a good idea. The studio can feel overwhelming and drawing is a good way to JUST GET STARTED. I showed your paintings to my students as examples of fabulous figure drawing, wonderful use of negative space and designing with dark value. Thank you for sharing what you do.
